Meet Dr. Spinella

Dr. Mary Katherine Spinella, DMD, MD is originally from New Jersey. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and went on to earn her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. She completed a six year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she also obtained her Doctor of Medicine (MD) and served as chief resident. As part of her training, she completed an additional year in general surgery and received specialized instruction in anesthesia, trauma, intensive care, and surgical oncology.
Dr. Spinella’s clinical interests include complex maxillofacial reconstruction, management of temporomandibular joint disorders, orthognathic surgery, dental implants, facial trauma, and the use of custom surgical hardware. She has authored several peer-reviewed publications in leading journals such as the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and the Journal of Women’s Health. Her research has been recognized with multiple awards, including the 2023 Daniel M. Laskin Award for the most outstanding manuscript in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the 2023 Maria Yeung Student Postdoctoral Research Award, and the 2024 Barnheart Excellent Award in Research for the resident with the most significant contribution to research. She also received the UT Health Housestaff Award for exemplary service to patients and colleagues from 2021–2022.
An active contributor to the academic community, Dr. Spinella has presented at both national and regional conferences and holds memberships in the American Association and American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. She is board-eligible with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and maintains active licenses in Texas and Virginia.
In addition to her academic and clinical achievements, Dr. Spinella is committed to community service, with experience ranging from COVID-19 telehealth outreach to jail-based dental care and school-based oral health advocacy in underserved communities. She brings a strong foundation in clinical care, research, and service to her practice and is excited to join the team in Southwest Virginia, return home to the East Coast, and enjoy the area’s rich history and outdoor opportunities.
